The Court of First Instance in Zagora issued a ruling yesterday, Monday, sentencing the head of the Tarnata commune to four months in prison and a fine of 2,000 dirhams, after his involvement in the illegal exploitation of potable water intended for several communes in the region.
The details of the case go back to the local authorities discovering that the person in question, about five years ago, diverted large quantities of public water intended for drinking water supply to his private agricultural lands, exploiting his position in the commune. The Public Prosecution pursued the communal official on charges related to the misuse of public resources and the breach of duties related to a vital facility, which sparked a wave of widespread resentment among the local population, who suffered from repeated water outages in recent years.
