New statements by a leader of the separatist "Polisario" front have created a wave of ridicule and astonishment, after his public threat to carry out a terrorist act consisting of bombing the Moroccan cities of Laayoune and Dakhla, in a move that observers considered additional evidence of the front's confusion and its field impotence since its illusory declaration of war against Morocco in 2020.
Mansour Omar, the representative of the separatist front in Europe, said in statements reported by Spanish media, that what he called the "Polisario forces" possess long-range weapons capable of targeting Moroccan cities, adding in a threatening tone that "Morocco will have neither phosphate nor fish," as he put it. The speaker continued his claims by saying that "acquiring weapons does not pose any problem for the front," denying their passage through Algerian territory, although everyone knows that the Algerian regime is the main financier and incubator of this movement that has been complicit with terrorist groups since the seventies of the last century, and that its military and logistical support is carried out under the direct supervision of the Algerian military apparatuses. Observers believe that these statements reflect the state of frustration and despair that the front's leadership is experiencing, after its dismal failure to achieve any field or political gain for more than four years, at a time when Morocco continues to strengthen its security defense wall and consolidate increasing international recognitions of its full sovereignty over its southern territories. It is worth noting that Mansour Omar had previously threatened in 2022, when he held the position of so-called "Polisario Minister of Interior," to use drones in the war of attrition against Morocco, but his threats, like other propaganda speeches of the front, did not exceed the limits of media bids and empty slogans.
