The Paris Public Prosecutor's Office announced on Wednesday that former French President Nicolas Sarkozy received death threats from a prisoner in La Santé prison in the French capital, where he began serving his sentence this week, prompting the authorities to open an urgent investigation.
The statement explained that the prison director informed the Public Prosecutor's Office on October 22, 2025, about a video circulating on social media, in which a resident directs threats towards Sarkozy upon his arrival at the prison. The statement pointed out the interrogation of three prisoners and the seizure of two phones during a search of the prison as part of the investigation. Sarkozy, who headed France between 2007 and 2012, began serving a five-year prison sentence on Tuesday after being convicted of conspiring to collect funds from Libya to finance his election campaign. Two armed officers were appointed to protect the former president during his imprisonment, amid objections from prison guard unions. The 70-year-old Sarkozy is staying in a solitary confinement section, where his cell is 11 square meters, equipped with a bed fixed to the floor, a small desk, a shower, and a toilet, with the possibility of contacting 10 specific numbers and receiving three weekly visits. He entered the prison with a small bag containing only 3 books and 10 personal photos. He is expected to remain in detention for weeks or months, pending the consideration of the parole court within two months, and if the appeal is rejected, he may remain in detention until his appeal trial scheduled for 2026.
