UN: Security Council praises Morocco’s efforts to resolve the Libyan crisis

Members of the UN Security Council praised, Wednesday in New York, Morocco’s efforts and its highly appreciated contributions to the resolution of the crisis in Libya.

Indeed, in a declaration adopted unanimously, the Fifteen “expressed their appreciation to the Kingdom of Morocco for having hosted the 6+6 Commission in Bouznika from May 22 to June 6, 2023”.

This distinction from the executive body of the UN constitutes clear and unequivocal UN and international recognition of the laudable efforts made by Morocco, in accordance with the High Instructions of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, with a view to supporting the efforts of the Libyan parties, the United Nations and the international community in the search for a definitive solution to the Libyan crisis, guaranteeing the national unity, territorial integrity, peace, stability and progress of Libya.

In this same statement, the members of the Security Council reaffirmed their support for the role of mediation and good offices of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, in accordance with the resolutions of the Security Council and by capitalizing in particular on the Libyan Political Agreement adopted in Skhirat in 2015, as well as on the progress made in the negotiations of the Libyan 6+6 Joint Commission aimed at giving rise to viable electoral laws.

This high appreciation by the Security Council towards the Kingdom follows those expressed by the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, the UN Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), the African Union and the League of Arab States who had all praised Morocco for its hosting of the 6+6 Commission and its credible efforts to help the Libyan parties achieve a solution to the conflict in the country.
