HIBAPRESS
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has requested his Algerian counterpart, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to grant "humanitarian" pardon to the Algerian writer with French citizenship, Boualem Sansal, who has been imprisoned for about a year.
Sansal was arrested on November 16, 2024, at the Algiers airport, which contributed to the tension in diplomatic relations between Algeria and France due to the issues of migration and Paris's stance on the Sahara. The Algerian presidency statement clarified that Steinmeier's request came in consideration of Sansal's advanced age (76 years old) and his deteriorating health condition, with a proposal to allow him to travel to Germany for treatment, noting that this initiative reflects a humanitarian spirit, a political vision, and strengthens relations between the two countries.
