HIBAPRESS – Follow-up
Mauritanian coast guard forces rescued 227 irregular migrants who were on board a traditional boat off the coast of Nouadhibou, north of the country, in an intervention that took place on November 12th.
A statement by the Coast Guard explained that the boat had departed from the Gambian coast on a dangerous journey that lasted more than ten days, before it was detected and those on board were rescued under conditions described as harsh due to hunger, thirst, and severe exhaustion. Upon the boat's arrival at the port, medical and security teams began providing first aid to the migrants from several African countries, while 15 critical cases were transferred to hospitals for necessary treatment. The statement indicated the registration of one migrant's death shortly after being transferred to the hospital, in a toll that embodied the suffering that accompanied the dangerous sea voyage.
