At least three people were killed Thursday night in New York when the driver of a car plowed into a crowd celebrating Independence Day in a Manhattan park, the city’s police department said.
A group of people gathered at Corlears Hook Park on the East Side of Lower Manhattan were hit by an intoxicated individual, the police chief told reporters.
Two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while the third succumbed to his injuries upon arrival at hospital. Eight other people were injured in the accident, according to the same source.
“According to the initial findings of the investigation, it appears that the driver was under the influence of alcohol,” the city’s mayor, Eric Adam, told the press, ruling out any link with terrorism.
According to CNN, the suspect was arrested by passers-by while waiting for the police to arrive.
