HIBAPRESS – Abdellatif Baraka
The prices of the most consumed cigarettes in Morocco are heading towards a new increase starting from January 1, 2026, according to information obtained by informed sources.
This change comes after the conclusion of the ministerial committee in charge of approving tobacco prices for its series of meetings, where the companies' proposals were discussed and the new tariff to be adopted officially was determined after the decision was published in the Official Gazette. According to the same sources, the expected increases will range between one and two dirhams per pack, depending on the different brands, with the increase focusing mainly on the best-selling cigarettes. These increases are related to the implementation of the existing agreement between the state and the actors in the sector regarding the gradual taxation, included in the 2022 Finance Law, which will reach its end next year. The committee is also working on reviewing the list of types of tobacco traded in the national market, removing products that do not meet the legal requirements stipulated in Law 46-02 regulating raw and manufactured tobacco. The services of the Ministry of Economy and Finance are keen to ensure the returns of the fees imposed on consumption, especially after recording the impact on revenues during the past years as a result of the companies bearing important parts of the tax increases to maintain their market shares. The government is betting within the 2026 Finance Bill on strengthening tax resources, especially the internal tax on tobacco consumption, to ensure stable funding for the general budget.
