The Governor of the Marrakech-Safi region, the governor of the Marrakech prefecture, Khatib Lahbil, chaired a meeting of the steering committee for the program to enhance the ancient city, which was devoted to monitoring the progress of ongoing projects to rehabilitate the historical urban fabric and enhance the cultural and tourist radiance of the ancient city of Marrakech. This meeting comes in the context of the local authorities' keenness to accelerate the pace of the open workshops within the historical space of the city and ensure the harmony of the interventions of various stakeholders.
The meeting was attended by the Secretary-General of the Marrakech Prefecture, and the Deputy Mayor of the city, in addition to the heads of the relevant external services and representatives of the decentralized institutions partners in the implementation of the program's projects. The meeting was an opportunity to assess the level of progress of the scheduled workshops, and to exchange technical data on the ongoing works and the upcoming project phases within the walls of the ancient city.
The agenda included a detailed technical presentation on the current situation of the program to enhance the ancient city, with a review of the completed projects and those that are in the process of being implemented or programmed. The focus was also on interventions to restore historical monuments, rehabilitate traditional buildings, improve infrastructure networks, and improve the quality of public spaces, which contributes to improving the living conditions of the population and enhancing the city's attractiveness to visitors.
In his speech, the governor stressed the need to respect the deadlines set for the completion of the various projects, and to ensure the quality of the works in all stages, while taking into account the urban specificities and the distinctive architectural identity of the ancient city. He also called for strengthening coordination between the various intervening services, and overcoming the technical and administrative difficulties that may impede the progress of the workshops, in order to achieve the objectives of the program in the shortest possible time.
The interveners during this meeting confirmed that the program to enhance the ancient city constitutes a strategic workshop to preserve the cultural heritage of Marrakech, improve its tourism and economic attractiveness, and ensure its continuation as a space for living and daily life, and not just as a tourist destination. It was agreed to continue holding periodic meetings of the steering committee to follow up on the implementation of the commitments, and to adjust the priorities of intervention according to the needs of the population and the requirements of heritage protection.
The program to enhance the ancient city of Marrakech continues its development path as one of the most important structured workshops in the city, which aims to preserve the identity of ancient Marrakech, and at the same time upgrade its urban space in a way that serves sustainable development and enhances the city's position as a cultural and tourist destination at the national and international levels.
