American President Donald Trump launched a scathing attack on European Union leaders, describing them as weak, during an interview with Politico today, Tuesday.
During his speech, Trump belittled the traditional allies of the United States, criticizing their failure – in his words – to control immigration and end the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. He also announced his readiness to support European political candidates who are in line with his vision for the future of the continent, warning that several European countries "will not be sustainable" if they continue their current policies on immigration. "They don't know what they're doing." In his unprecedented attack, Trump said: "I think they are weak… and they are trying to appear Politically Correct," adding: "Europe doesn't know what to do." He considered that the European Union is not doing enough to end the Russian-Ukrainian war, stressing that "Russia is in a much stronger position than Ukraine." He reiterated his call for presidential elections in Ukraine, a demand he had previously hinted at in multiple statements. Trump's statements come at a sensitive time when negotiations related to ending the war between Russia and Ukraine are witnessing a very complex stage, amid European fears of Trump's possible abandonment of support for Kyiv and its allies if he returns to the White House. European leaders also believe that some of the items in Trump's proposed plan to stop the war are unrealistic or unacceptable to them. In a related context, the national security strategy put forward by Trump has angered a number of European countries, led by Germany, which has called on the European Union countries to strengthen their defense capabilities and rely on themselves away from future American support.
