US President Donald Trump continued his criticism of the Somali community in Minnesota on Wednesday, a speech he has been repeating since the election of Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar, the first American of Somali descent to reach Congress in 2018.
During a rally that was supposed to focus on economic affairs, Trump addressed Ilhan Omar, saying: "I love this Ilhan Omar, whatever her name is, the one with the little turban… I love her, but she does nothing but complain," as he put it. Then Trump moved on to criticize Somalia, describing it as "the worst country in the world," claiming that it "does not have an army or a parliament, does not know the meaning of parliament, and has no police, and that Somalis watch themselves and fight all the time." Trump, during his speech, indicated the need to "remove her outside the United States," referring to Omar, which prompted the crowd to chant: "Send her back to her country." In response, Ilhan Omar responded via social media, describing Trump's statements as "a disgrace to the nation," adding that "his obsession with her is very strange, and he needs serious help," considering that his resort to what she described as "fanatical speeches" comes as a result of the absence of economic achievements that he can boast about.
