HIBAPRESS – Ahmed Sabbar
Mohammed Bouarrouro, a leader of the Authenticity and Modernity Party, assumed the presidency of the Oriental Region Council in July 2024, after being unanimously elected as the successor to the former president, Abdellnabi Bioui, in an important political moment that reflects the confidence of the elected officials in his leadership of one of the largest regional entities in Morocco.
Since taking office, Bouarrouro has launched various development projects that meet the needs of the local population and respond to the social and economic priorities of the region, within a vision that focuses on improving the quality of life, strengthening infrastructure, expanding basic services, and encouraging investment.
One of the first initiatives overseen by Bouarrouro was the inauguration of a series of projects aimed at strengthening the social and health infrastructure in the region, in the context of the celebration of the 22nd anniversary of the Royal Initiative for the development of the Oriental region. These projects are part of ongoing efforts to reduce disparities and improve basic services for the population.
Bouarrouro was keen to sign strategic partnership agreements with economic and local partners, with the aim of enhancing the region's economic and tourism attractiveness, and encouraging investors to invest in a number of vital sectors. These agreements focused on supporting small and medium-sized enterprises and strengthening the business climate in the East.
In working sessions and council decisions, several agreements and project financing partnerships were approved to provide rural communities and remote areas with drinking water with a significant financial value, which enhances social development in villages and limits rural migration.
The Oriental Region Council, under the leadership of Bouarrouro, has worked on opening and expanding road networks in remote areas, contributing to connecting villages and hamlets with urban centers, facilitating the movement of the population, and stimulating economic and social activity.
The Oriental region has also witnessed interest in the sports field, where the president made an inspection visit to a group of sports projects under construction in Oujda, including the construction of multi-purpose halls and stadiums with the aim of supporting youth and upgrading local sports.
Bouarrouro's activity was not limited to internal affairs, but rather went beyond that to strengthen regional cooperation between the Oriental region and its counterpart, the Atariza region in Mauritania, through a working visit and the signing of memoranda of understanding that support economic and investment cooperation between the two sides.
Through his meetings with government officials, such as his meeting with the Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, Bouarrouro presented a comprehensive vision to accelerate the implementation of major projects in water, road, and port infrastructure – including the strategic project of the Nador "West Mediterranean" port, which is a pivotal point in the development of the East and the creation of job opportunities.
It should be noted that in less than a year and a half since taking office, Mohammed Bouarrouro has succeeded in laying solid and realistic development foundations for the Oriental region, combining social projects, strategic infrastructure, investment support, and external cooperation, which enhances the development path in one of the most important regions of Morocco.
