A number of community activists in the Al-Massira district of Bensouda in the city of Fes expressed their extreme dissatisfaction with the situation the area has reached due to the collapse of two buildings, holding the local authorities responsible, headed by the leaders and authority agents, because of what they described as "the absence of strictness and administrative follow-up," which, according to their expression, contributed to the exacerbation of the problems and their transformation into something resembling a "social and organizational disaster."
A spokesperson for the community activists, who requested anonymity, explained that the neighborhood has suffered for years from multiple imbalances, including the spread of chaos in illegal construction, weak monitoring, and the growing manifestations of laxity, stressing that these conditions would not have reached this level without the absence of good governance and continuity in assuming responsibility.
The spokesperson added that some leaders remain in their positions for only four or five years before leaving without real accountability, leaving behind pending files and accumulated problems, which negatively reflects on the stability of the neighborhoods and the residents' trust in the administration.
The community activists demanded the necessity of linking responsibility with accountability and adopting a strict approach in managing local affairs, based on daily follow-up, communication with the residents, and addressing all manifestations of chaos without selectivity or leniency.
They also called on the responsible authorities at the city level to intervene urgently to restore order, evaluate the performance of local officials, and put an end to what they described as "the logic of impunity," in order to preserve the security and stability of the area and the dignity of its residents.
The community activists added that the phenomenon of illegal construction is one of the most prominent direct reasons that exacerbated the situation in the area, stressing that this type of unauthorized construction is often carried out in the light of leniency or overlooking from the responsible authorities. They pointed out that the Al-Massira area has been known for years for the spread of illegal construction, which has turned it into a real hotbed of risks.
The same spokesperson pointed out that the disaster of the collapse of two buildings in the area, which left a painful human tragedy claiming the lives of 22 people, clearly embodies the dangerous results of the absence of strict monitoring and the failure to apply the law in the field of construction, holding the local authorities responsible for not intervening at the appropriate time to limit this phenomenon before it turned into a tragedy.
