The city of Badalona, a suburb of Barcelona, is witnessing a worrying humanitarian situation after the eviction of a number of people from buildings where they were residing. They found themselves without shelter and directly facing the street, sleeping under the arches and in open spaces, in harsh weather conditions characterized by rain and cold.
According to field data, the eviction process, which came within the framework of applying the laws related to the recovery of occupied buildings, left difficult social conditions for these people, who did not have immediate housing alternatives. Many of them were forced to take shelter under bridges and arches, in scenes that reflect the extent of the vulnerability experienced by some groups within the major cities. This situation raises broad questions about the balance between the application of the law and humanitarian considerations, especially when it comes to people who are already suffering from poverty or social exclusion. The continuous rain and low temperatures increase the risk of exposure to diseases, especially among children and the elderly if they are among the affected. For its part, human rights and associative activities are calling for urgent intervention by the local and regional authorities, in order to provide temporary housing solutions and ensure the minimum of human dignity for these affected people, until permanent solutions are found that take into account their social situations. This incident brings back to the forefront the discussion about the housing crisis in a number of Spanish cities, and the need for more comprehensive social policies that guarantee the right to housing and prevent the recurrence of such human tragedies, especially in periods of bad weather.
