HIBAPRESS – Rabat
The Nigerian government announced on Monday that the recent diplomatic dispute with the United States, in which President Donald Trump threatened military intervention against the backdrop of allegations of massacres against Christians, "has been largely resolved."
In October and November, US President Donald Trump unexpectedly criticized Nigeria, saying that its Christians faced an "existential threat" amounting to "genocide" amid the multiple armed conflicts in the West African country. Some welcomed this diplomatic campaign, while others considered that it could inflame religious tensions in the largest African country by population, which has witnessed waves of sectarian violence in the past. Nigerian Information Minister Mohammed Idris said on Monday at a press conference held in the capital to mark the end of the year: "The recent diplomatic dispute with the United States has been largely resolved through a serious dialogue based on respect, which culminated in the strengthening of the partnership between America and Nigeria."
