HIBAPRESS – Sports
Some Algerian media outlets have begun promoting a skeptical narrative regarding the refereeing team for the upcoming Algeria vs. Sudan match in the 2025 African Cup of Nations in Morocco, by publishing news and comments that question the integrity of the Gabonese referee Pierre Achu, who was appointed to officiate the match.
Algerian newspapers, pages, and television channels circulated false information, through which they attempted to stir controversy about the refereeing before the starting whistle. Observers noted that this narrative reflects a kind of early mourning, as if it is psychological preparation for a possible negative result, through the marketing of narratives that claim the referee will be an opponent of the Algerian national team. These narratives relied on prior interpretations and hypothetical scenarios, without relying on concrete facts or professional evidence, which raises questions about the background of this media escalation. Observers warn that such a narrative may contribute to fueling unjustified tension and put pressure on referees and players alike, instead of focusing on the sporting aspects and fair competition. They also emphasize that continental refereeing committees adopt precise standards in appointing referees, and that questioning their integrity in advance harms the image of the continental competition more than it serves the interest of any national team.
