An atmosphere of sadness hung over the Nigerian national football team, after goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali received the news of his mother's death, just before playing the round of 16 match of the 2025 African Cup of Nations held in Morocco.
Nwabali appeared in a video affected by the news, expressing a strong shock and deep sadness, explaining that this tragedy came only two months after the loss of his father, which made him experience complete orphanhood in a short period, a human situation he described as heavy and painful. The Nigerian goalkeeper confirmed that what he is going through goes beyond the sporting aspect, pointing out the difficulty of concentrating on matches in light of these harsh psychological circumstances that imposed themselves on his path during the tournament. In the same context, the technical staff and the Nigerian Football Federation expressed their reaction to the situation, while awaiting a decision on Nwabali's participation in the next match, amid a wave of widespread sympathy from the fans and followers, who expressed their solidarity with the goalkeeper during this human ordeal.
