The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened a disciplinary investigation following the serious events that occurred during the Algeria vs. Nigeria match, which ended with the Algerian national team losing 2-0, and the subsequent violations inside and outside the stadium.
The decision to open the investigation, according to circulating information, came in response to sharp protests from the Algerian national team players against the Senegalese refereeing team led by Issa Sy, where the referee and his assistants were recorded as being surrounded in an atmosphere charged with tension, in addition to attempts to invade the pitch by some fans and the accompanying acts of chaos and vandalism.
The recorded incidents also included events described as dangerous in the mixed zone, where clashes erupted between Algerian and Moroccan journalists, which began with an exchange of insults before escalating into physical assaults, which necessitated intervention to contain the situation.
The Confederation of African Football is expected to issue its decisions in the coming few days, amid widespread anticipation of what these investigations will yield, given their connection to the image and credibility of the African Cup of Nations, and the extent of the continental body's strictness in dealing with such behaviors.
