Recent estimates suggest that 600 million jobs will need to be created over the next 15 years to meet youth employment needs.
In 2023, approximately 75 million young people were unemployed, 408 million were employed and 732 million were inactive worldwide.
The share of young people not in employment, education or training (NEET) as of 2020 – the latest year for which an overall estimate is available – reached 23.3%, an increase of 1.5%, a level not seen for at least 15 years.
The youth population will increase by more than 78 million between 2024 and 2030. Low-income countries will account for almost half of this increase. Education and training systems must respond to this challenge.
Over the past two decades, the incidence of paid work among young people has increased by 15%, compared to 8% among adults.
Quality apprenticeships, well-designed internships and volunteering initiatives can provide entry points into the job market for first-time job seekers and recent graduates.
