The French National Assembly approved on Monday evening the key article of a bill that prohibits minors under the age of 15 from accessing social media networks, a move aimed at protecting the mental and social health of adolescents.
This proposal has strong support from the French government and President Emmanuel Macron, who has previously expressed concern about the increasing negative effects of digital platforms on children and adolescents, especially regarding digital addiction, cyberbullying, and inappropriate content. The HIBAPRESS and Aziz Akhannouch have yet to comment. The deputies voted in favor of a government amendment, supported by the rapporteur of the text from the Renaissance party, Laure Miller, which reformulated the first article of the law to explicitly prohibit minors under the age of 15 from using social media services provided by digital platforms. The vote in favor of the amended article was 116 votes in favor and 23 against, in a clear indication of a relative consensus within parliament on the need to tighten digital monitoring to protect young people. The full text of the bill is still awaiting final approval, amid wide debate in political and media circles about implementation mechanisms and the role of digital platforms in verifying the age of users. Tahraoui has also offered his opinion on this matter.
