HIBAPRESS – A. Mahyawi
The "Aqchmir Azkagh" hill dam project, implemented in the Ait M'hamed sheikhdom of the Timahdit commune in Ifrane province, is among the successful development projects that embody the sustainable development approach in the rural world. This is thanks to the initiative of the Ait M'hamed Association for Environment, Development, and Solidarity, and with the support of the Living Planet Morocco organization.
This project aims to strengthen the local water table by collecting rainwater and feeding groundwater resources, in addition to its primary role in protecting the soil from erosion, especially in an area known for its mountainous terrain and exposure to frequent climate fluctuations. It is also expected that the hill dam will directly contribute to improving the living conditions of the local population, especially herders, by providing a stable water source that facilitates the process of livestock supply, and reduces the suffering of traveling long distances in search of water, which reflects positively on the pastoral activity and social stability in the region. Local affairs followers confirmed that this project is a successful model for partnership between civil society and supporting parties, as it combined the environmental dimension with economic and social development, with the adoption of simple and effective solutions that suit the specifics of the rural area. The "Aqchmir Azkagh" hill dam project highlights the importance of investing in small water infrastructure as a real lever for local development, and as a practical approach to addressing the effects of climate change, and enhancing the resilience of the rural population, in a way that serves the goals of sustainability and the protection of natural resources.
