Under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, Morocco has chosen to move up a gear in the field of renewable energies, in order to ensure the transition to a green and global economy, said Thursday in Kigali, the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Ryad Mezzour.

The Kingdom of Morocco aims to increase the share of renewable energies in the energy mix to 52% and reduce energy consumption by 20% by 2030, said the minister who spoke during a round table. held under the theme “Investing in Morocco: Decarbonize to prosper,” organized as part of the work of the Africa CEO Forum (May 16-17).

“We are aware that we must rely on our own means in this area, knowing that Morocco imported 99% of its energy needs,” said Mr. Mezzour, noting that thanks to the efforts deployed, the Kingdom has currently become one of the rare countries in the region capable of ensuring their energy security.

“From Kigali, we can affirm that Morocco’s ambition embraces that of the continent for a transition to a green economy,” he continued, adding that Africa is the only continent called to make this transition in order to create more job opportunities.

The work of the 2024 edition of the Africa CEO Forum opened on Thursday in Kigali, with the participation of nearly 2,000 business leaders and political decision-makers from several African countries, including Morocco.

The Kingdom is represented at this two-day event by a large delegation led by Mr. Ryad Mezzour and notably composed of Chakib Alj, president of the Confédération Générale des Entreprises du Maroc (CGEM), the president and CEO of Royal Air Maroc ( RAM), Abdelhamid Addou and the president of the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, Hicham El Habti.

Placed under the theme “AI, Leadership, Common Market: How Africa can win its place at the table of tomorrow’s powers,” the Forum is, according to the organizers, the largest international meeting of the African private sector.
