Pressure is mounting on US President Joe Biden within his Democratic Party to withdraw from the race for the White House.
Several senior Democratic lawmakers have publicly expressed concerns about Biden’s chances in November’s presidential election, citing his physical and mental state given his advanced age.
The American president, who tested positive for Covid and was forced to isolate himself, is trying as best he can to resist the growing pressure and the polls’ predictions that his Republican rival, Donald Trump, will be the winner.
According to US media reports, several Democratic Party leaders and major donors believe that Biden is unable to win the upcoming election and cannot change public perception of his age and acuity.
Some Democratic lawmakers believe that continuing Biden’s candidacy could cost the party not only the White House but also its Senate majority.
Democrats expect polls following the Republican National Convention to show a big lead for Trump, who just days ago escaped an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania.
According to a poll conducted by the American news agency AP, nearly two-thirds of Democrats want Biden to withdraw from the presidential race.
ABC News reported that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer told Biden on Saturday that it would be better if he withdrew his candidacy.
Meanwhile, CNN reported that former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told him he could destroy Democrats’ chances of regaining the majority in the lower house of Congress if he continued to run.
Biden, whose performance in the first presidential debate on June 27 was widely criticized, appears increasingly isolated within his own Democratic camp.
Faced with this growing pressure, the White House and its campaign team continue to be reassuring and emphasize that the White House tenant is determined to win a second term at the head of the country.
