Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has just announced its decision to re-use facial recognition technology, as part of its efforts to strengthen cybersecurity, by identifying and combating fake accounts.
“By adopting these advanced technologies, we aim to improve user security and simplify account recovery,” Meta emphasized in a blog post.
The American giant will use facial recognition to compare profile photos of suspicious accounts with verified images of public figures. This will allow fraudulent profiles to be detected and removed more quickly and to avoid scams also called “celeb-bait”.
“We immediately delete all facial data generated after this comparison, whether there is a match or not,” assures the Meta company.
This restart comes after the abandonment of this technology in 2021, the group having already tried to put it in place before it encountered concerns from Internet users regarding the use of their personal data.
