HIBAPRESS – Follow-up
Field efforts continue apace by various public authorities in the city of Ksar El Kebir in preparation for the expected weather disturbances starting today, Monday, February 2nd.
Evacuation operations of citizens to neighboring cities have not stopped since the end of last weekend, within the framework of a comprehensive mobilization of local authorities and other stakeholders from military and civilian authorities. This has been reflected in the pace of daily life in the city, which has lost its usual movement, in anticipation of the intensification of the strength of the climatic disturbances in the coming days.
According to a warning bulletin from the General Directorate of Meteorology of "red" alert level, heavy, sometimes thundery, rainfall is expected, with measurements ranging between 100 and 150 mm in a number of prefectures located in the water basin of the Loukkos River and its other tributaries, such as Chefchaouen, Tetouan, Ouazzane, and Larache, starting the day after tomorrow, Wednesday, from midnight to eleven o'clock at night.
Considering this exceptional circumstance, the local authorities are accompanying many citizens who wish to temporarily leave their homes in the city of Ksar El Kebir, in anticipation of the return of the rising water level of the Loukkos River, which may lead to the flooding of a number of city neighborhoods again.
In this context, the local authorities are making strenuous efforts to help all people living in areas exposed to the risk of floods, to move to safe places, whether inside or outside the city of Ksar El Kebir, where more than 70 buses and a number of trains have been provided to transport citizens to their destinations, a process that is still ongoing.
With the exception of the high neighborhoods of the city, a group of residents have evacuated their homes and traders have closed their shops in areas exposed to the risk of flooding, which has led to a noticeable decline in the pace of daily life in a city that represents a vital crossing between the north and center of the Kingdom.
In anticipation of the return of the rising water level of the Loukkos River, many citizens have built barriers of bricks and cement or placed sandbags on the doors of homes and shops, to reduce the extent of the damage.
In this context, Youssef, a merchant in the Sidi Bouhamed market, in the center of Ksar El Kebir, confirmed that he preferred to close his shop, like the rest of the merchants, in response to the instructions in this exceptional circumstance that requires a positive interaction with the weather warnings and with the guidance of the local authorities, expressing his hope that the situation will improve in the future.
As for Hassan, a professional driver of a second-class taxi, he pointed out that he preferred to stay in the city because he lives in a neighborhood not threatened by the flood of the Loukkos River, adding that he had not witnessed such a situation during his 40 years in Ksar El Kebir.
He pointed out that, based on the values of solidarity in these difficult circumstances, he is working to transport citizens wishing to leave the city free of charge, to the bus gathering center departing outside the city.
