The Municipality of Rome has begun implementing a new measure that requires tourists wishing to visit the Trevi Fountain, one of the most prominent historical and tourist landmarks in the Italian capital, to pay an entrance fee. This step aims to reduce the large crowds and regulate the flow of visitors to this famous site.
As of today, Monday, foreign tourists are required to pay a fee of 2 euros to access the area close to the fountain and descend the stairs leading to its immediate surroundings, while most parts of the surrounding square will remain open to the public free of charge. This decision comes in light of the continuous increase in the number of visitors in recent years, where it has become difficult to get close to the fountain or enjoy its architectural beauty due to the constant crowds, especially during peak tourist periods. In this context, Alessandro Onorato, the tourism advisor to the Municipality of Rome, explained in press statements that this measure is expected to generate annual revenues of no less than six million euros for the city's treasury, stressing that the primary goal remains to organize visits and preserve the quality of the tourist experience. The Italian capital is following in the footsteps of other tourist cities within the country, such as Venice, which had previously imposed entry fees of 5 euros during weekends in the peak season of 2024, in an effort to reduce tourist pressure and protect cultural and architectural heritage.
