HIBAPRESS – Ahmed Al-Musaed
The city of Berkane witnessed, on Wednesday, February 4th, the outbreak of a major fire in the waste dump located within the weekly market area, which caused a state of alert among the local authorities and civil protection services.
The fire broke out suddenly in the area designated for waste collection, where the nature of the flammable materials present on the site helped the flames spread very quickly, as thick columns of smoke rose, covering the sky over the area. Upon being notified of the incident, civil protection elements quickly moved, supported by tanker trucks and logistical mechanisms. Despite the strong winds that the city witnessed today, which contributed to the expansion of the fire and the difficult intervention, the high professionalism of the firefighting teams enabled the fire to be contained in record time to prevent its spread to other wings of the market, and extinguished the burning areas completely after hours of continuous work, while securing the perimeter to ensure that the fire did not renew. In parallel with the firefighting operations, the local authorities and national security elements arrived at the scene, and a preliminary investigation was opened to determine the real causes behind the outbreak of this fire, which are still unknown.
