The Indonesian army announced the beginning of preparations for a possible deployment of its forces in the Gaza Strip, as part of the "Peace Council" mission that US President Donald Trump had previously revealed.
Army Chief of Staff Maruli Simanjuntak said on Monday that the army had begun training personnel who could be assigned to the peacekeeping mission, according to statements published by local newspapers.
Maruli added: "We have started training individuals who can become peacemakers, so we are preparing engineering and medical units of this kind."
He pointed out that the number of personnel to be deployed has not yet been determined, but he clarified that one brigade usually consists of 5,000 to 8,000 soldiers.
He said: "It is not certain yet. There are no confirmed numbers at the moment," and the Chief of Staff did not confirm the date for the start of the Indonesian forces' deployment in Gaza.
He added that the army is currently focusing on equipping personnel, pending further coordination regarding the situation in the devastated sector.
Maruli said: "We are waiting for the results of the coordination in Gaza. You can inquire from the Indonesian army command later."
