HIBAPRESS – Abdellatif Baraka
Nizar Baraka, Minister of Equipment and Water, confirmed in an official statement after the government meeting that water inflows to the national dams have risen remarkably thanks to the recent exceptional rainfall, which contributed to increasing the water stored in the dams to levels that guarantee the Kingdom's supply of drinking water for a period of two to three years to come, depending on the water basin.
The Minister explained that the national dams have received more than 12.17 billion cubic meters of water since the beginning of the water season, which is a surplus of more than 134% compared to the average water inflows, which has strengthened the total stock unprecedentedly in recent years. Baraka pointed out that eight of the ten major water basins in the country have dams filling rates exceeding 45%, while some have reached very high levels, which has made it possible to improve the water situation in general and overcome the long drought that the Kingdom has experienced for many years. The Minister added that these positive data came as a result of the significant rainfall and snowfall that various regions of the country have witnessed, as the amounts of rain and snowmelt contributed significantly to feeding the dams during the recent months. For its part, the competent authorities continue to monitor the developments in water resources and take the necessary measures to ensure the sustainability of supply, in light of the climatic challenges imposed by climate change and the increasing demand for drinking water.
