HIBAPRESS – Rabat
Musaad Boules, senior advisor to US President Donald Trump on Arab and African Affairs, considered that Algeria is a party to the Moroccan Sahara dispute, in a new confirmation of the failure of the "Muradia Palace" efforts to evade responsibility for protracting the file.
Boules said in a statement to the German channel "Deutsche Welle" that the UN resolution issued on October 31 regarding the Sahara issue constitutes an "important and historic" station in the 50-year-old conflict, stressing that the United States played a pivotal role in pushing for its adoption. Boules added that the UN resolution identified the parties to the conflict, namely Morocco, the Polisario, Algeria, and Mauritania, stressing that the file is "very complex" and that it is not possible to delve into the details of the ongoing talks, but he confirmed that the latest UN resolution was welcomed by all concerned parties. The American official clarified that Washington plays the role of "pen holder" in the Security Council regarding this file, highlighting that the Trump administration, led by the US President and his Secretary of State Marco Rubio, made "intensive efforts" to push towards the adoption of the UN resolution, considering that the consensus of the parties around it constitutes an "important indicator". Regarding the prospects for implementing the resolution, he admitted that the implementation of the contents of the resolution may take time, calling for not rushing the results or anticipating developments, and pointing out that putting the conflict "on the path to a solution" remains an essential step, whether the path is long or short. In response to a question related to what was discussed in Madrid recently, and especially the updated autonomy paper submitted by Morocco, Boules affirmed his country's respect for the confidentiality of the consultations, explaining that he cannot go into details concerning the parties involved. Trump's advisor concluded his statement by emphasizing that the "leadership and pragmatism" of the US President give optimism about the possibility of making progress on this file, like other disputes that he said the US administration contributed to putting on the path to a solution.
