On Thursday, during a meeting of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union, Morocco called for strengthening climate governance across the continent through intensive coordination between the relevant African mechanisms, with the aim of addressing security risks associated with climate change in a coordinated and sustainable manner.
This position was expressed during a virtual plenary session of the Council dedicated to discussing the relationship between climate, peace, and security, where the Moroccan delegation emphasized the direct impact of climate imbalances on the most vulnerable groups, especially those who depend on subsistence agriculture and traditional fishing, threatening their food security and livelihoods. The delegation also mentioned Morocco's permanent commitment to unified African positions on climate issues, highlighting the organization of the first African Climate Action Summit on the sidelines of the Climate Conference (COP22), in addition to launching structural initiatives to enhance the continent's ability to adapt to climate change. Furthermore, it emphasized the need to provide adequate support to island nations to implement the defined action pathways, in order to ensure the sustainability of sustainable food systems and enhance their resilience in the face of climate challenges. The Moroccan delegation stressed the importance of exchanging experiences and transferring technology, with a clear priority given to early warning systems, prevention mechanisms, and disaster risk reduction strategies, in addition to exploring innovative financing mechanisms for climate action, and integrating climate governance into the core of African dynamics for a preventive, coherent, and sustainable approach.
