Rwandan President Paul Kagame has been re-elected for a fourth term in elections held last week, according to final results announced Monday by the Rwanda Electoral Commission.
President Kagame won 99.18 percent of the votes cast, compared to 0.5 percent for the leader of the Democratic Green Party, Frank Habineza, and 0.32 percent for the independent candidate, Philippe Mpayimana, the Electoral Commission said on its website, noting that the turnout reached 98.19 percent.
In the legislative elections, which were held simultaneously with the presidential election, the coalition led by the Rwandan Patriotic Front Party (RPF) won 37 of the 53 seats (68.83% of the vote), ahead of the Liberal Party and the Social Democratic Party (5 seats each) and the Green Democratic Party (2 seats).
More than 9 million voters were called to vote in this double ballot, unprecedented in the history of this East African country.
