After several days of negotiations, the left-wing coalition, formed under the banner of the New Popular Front (NFP), in the context of the early legislative elections and which won the largest number of seats in the National Assembly, but without obtaining an absolute majority, proposed, on Tuesday evening, a candidate for the post of Prime Minister.
The various political parties of the NFP, namely the Socialist Party, the Ecologists, France Insoumise and the Communists, have agreed on the name of Lucie Castets, a senior civil servant unknown to the general public.
Aged 37, the left-wing candidate is currently director of finance and purchasing for the Paris municipality.
In an interview on French television on Tuesday evening, his first since the legislative elections, President Emmanuel Macron did not comment directly on this candidacy and specified that the appointment of a new prime minister would not take place until after the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
President Macron nevertheless clarified that the NFP does not have a majority in the National Assembly.
“The question is not a name. The question is what majority can emerge in the Assembly so that a government of France can pass reforms, pass a budget and move the country forward,” he said, calling on the Republican Front parties to be “up to the moment” and to “make compromises.”
