HIBAPRESS – Barcelona: Omar Razzini
Catalonia witnessed on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 24 and 25, 2026, a general strike by train drivers, which caused widespread disruptions in traffic, especially in areas that are major economic centers. This union action came in protest against what the workers described as a lack of safety guarantees within the Spanish railway network.
According to union representatives, the sector has suffered for years from a clear lack of investments directed towards the maintenance of infrastructure, which has led to the deterioration of parts of the network and an increase in concerns related to operational safety. They stressed that the continuation of this situation may negatively affect the quality of services and the safety of passengers.
The unions demanded that the concerned authorities inject additional investments to modernize and maintain the railways, in addition to strengthening human resources by hiring more drivers and technicians. The protesters believe that these measures are necessary to ensure the continuity of service safely and effectively, and to avoid further disruptions in the future.
