The Netherlands is experiencing significant disruptions in train traffic due to snowfall and harsh winter weather conditions, leading to delays and cancellations of some journeys on a number of lines, amid warnings of the continuation of this situation in the coming hours.
The Dutch Railways (NS) announced that the freezing of technical equipment, especially railway switching points, has caused a partial disruption to train traffic, noting that the difficulty of predicting the distribution of snowfall makes it difficult to accurately identify the areas most affected by delays. The company called on travelers to follow up on the updates of the journeys and to plan their travels shortly before departure, in light of the rapid changes imposed by the weather conditions. Several lines recorded, during Sunday, a reduction in the service pace or a temporary suspension, while the high-speed train traffic between Rotterdam and Breda was affected due to a technical malfunction resulting from the freezing of one of the railway switches. Some suburban train journeys on a number of internal routes were also cancelled. For its part, the Royal Dutch Meteorological Institute (KNMI) reported that additional snowfall is expected in the inland areas, while the coasts will experience a mixture of rain and wet snow, which is likely to continue the disruptions in rail transport. The Dutch Railways confirmed that the coincidence of the cold wave with the ongoing maintenance work will continue to affect train traffic in a number of areas, calling on travelers to be flexible and prepared for the possibility of delays during their travels.
