The Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations, under the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance, in a simultaneous and joint operation with the General Commissariat of Intelligence "CGI" of the Spanish National Police, this Wednesday morning, dismantled a terrorist cell affiliated with the terrorist organization "ISIS", consisting of three extremist elements operating between the two countries.
The Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations explained in a statement that this qualitative security operation falls within the context of joint operations and mutual investigations carried out by the Moroccan security services in coordination with their Spanish counterparts, with the aim of neutralizing the risks of the terrorist threat, and dismantling extremist networks and organizations that threaten the security of both countries. The simultaneous field interventions carried out within the framework of this joint operation resulted in the arrest of two elements in the city of Tangier by members of the special force of the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance, while the Spanish security services arrested the "leader" of this terrorist cell in the city of Majorca. The initial results of the investigations carried out up to this stage of the investigation indicate the involvement of the cell members arrested in Morocco in providing funding and logistical support to fighters operating in the branches of the "ISIS" organization in the Sahel region south of the Sahara and Somalia, while the leader of this cell is suspected of planning to carry out a terrorist operation in Spain according to individual terrorism methods. For the needs of the judicial investigation, the two suspects arrested in the city of Tangier have been placed under custody pending the investigation conducted by the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations under the supervision of the Public Prosecution in charge of terrorism cases, in order to uncover all the extensions of this network and its national and regional connections. This new security operation crowns a long path of joint security work between the Moroccan security services and their Spanish counterparts, and also embodies the importance of the strategic partnership between the two countries in the security field, which has been crowned with the dismantling of more than 30 terrorist cells between the two countries since 2014, which has contributed to thwarting major threats and thwarting dangerous plans affecting the security of the two countries.
