The Czech Republic stated on Thursday that "genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty constitutes the most viable solution" to the dispute over the Sahara, adding that it intends to act on this basis.
This position was expressed in the joint declaration, which was signed in Rabat, following the meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and the Deputy Prime Minister and Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs, Petr Macinka, who is on his first visit to the Kingdom. The joint declaration clarified that the Czech Republic's ambassador to Morocco will visit the Sahara region in order to prepare for visits by Czech businessmen and support joint economic initiatives. It also confirmed that the Czech Republic's embassy in Rabat will, from now on, expand its consular coverage to include the Sahara, like the rest of the Kingdom's territory, in line with the Czech Republic's position on the Moroccan Sahara issue at the diplomatic, economic and consular levels. On the same occasion, the Czech Republic welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), where "it considers the autonomy proposal presented by Morocco in 2007 to be the most appropriate, serious, credible and realistic basis for reaching a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution by all parties and final," the joint declaration added. The two ministers also renewed their support for the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to the Sahara, as well as for his efforts to advance the political process, with the aim of reaching a final political solution to this regional dispute.
