Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune decided on Thursday to reactivate the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborliness and Cooperation, which links his country with Spain, signed in October 2002, after approximately two years of its suspension.
A statement from the presidency of the republic stated that Tebboune informed Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares of the decision, following his reception today at the beginning of an official visit to Algeria. The statement explained that the meeting was an opportunity to review the state of bilateral relations and future prospects for cooperation, noting that these relations are witnessing "remarkable dynamism" in terms of consolidation and diversification. Algeria had suspended this treaty in June 2022 against the backdrop of Spain's announcement of its support for the Moroccan autonomy proposal in the Sahara, before being forced to back down due to Madrid's adherence to its pro-Rabat stance in the fabricated conflict.
