The amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli has arrived in the Middle East, carrying approximately 3,500 soldiers and sailors from the US Marine Corps, raising questions about Washington's potential intentions regarding expanding the scope of military operations against Iran, especially the hypothesis of a ground intervention.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) clarified via the X platform that the ship, which is usually based in Japan, arrived as part of an offensive group that includes transport aircraft, fighter jets, and amphibious assault equipment. Pictures on board the ship showed Seahawk helicopters, Osprey aircraft, and F‑35B fighters, reflecting the group's ability to carry out various operations including naval landings and direct air support. This move comes after statements by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who confirmed the United States' ability to achieve its goals towards Iran without resorting to ground forces, while US President Donald Trump still adopts an ambiguous stance on this file, leaving room for wide speculation about the upcoming military scenarios. The Tripoli is one of the largest offensive ships in the Western Pacific, 257 meters long, and includes F‑35B stealth fighter jets, AV‑8B aircraft, transport and attack helicopters, in addition to landing craft and advanced air defense systems such as RIM‑116 RAM, RIM‑162 ESSM, and the Phalanx Close-In Weapon System. The ship bears the name "Tripoli" in honor of a US Marine Corps force that participated in the Battle of Derna in 1805, which ended with the signing of a peace treaty, and this is immortalized in the US Marine Corps anthem entitled: "To the Shores of Tripoli".
