HIBAPRESS – Casablanca
The residents of Berrechid, especially the traders of the Qaisariya, were surprised by a sudden demolition operation that affected the "Barans" corridor, which the previous municipal council had built about seven years ago, as part of the rehabilitation of commercial spaces and improving the working conditions of professionals.
Graders and workers of the National Promotion initiated the removal operation amid widespread astonishment, given the value of the project and the cost spent on it from public money. The current head of the municipal council oversaw this operation, in a move that raised many questions about the justifications and background of the decision, especially in the absence of detailed official clarifications explaining the reasons for the demolition of a relatively recent project. A number of observers believe that this step raises the problem of managing public projects and the continuity of local policies between successive councils. Local actors demanded an open debate on how public money is spent and the feasibility of the projects carried out, stressing that such decisions may undermine citizens' confidence in collective work, and they also called for holding those responsible accountable, and ensuring that such cases, which waste financial resources that could have been directed to more sustainable and beneficial projects for the population, are not repeated.
