HIBAPRESS – Abdellatif Baraka
Before the celebration of Moroccan workers' international Labor Day, May 1st, the April round of social dialogue in Morocco has entered the implementation phase, following the government's initiation of official correspondence to the most representative unions, along with the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises, in a step that reflects the reactivation of negotiation channels on a number of priority social files.
This initiative comes in the context of the authorities' efforts to consolidate social dialogue as an institutional mechanism for managing demands, especially in light of the rising expectations of workers regarding the improvement of their living and professional conditions. The files of wage increases and the improvement of retirement pensions top the agenda of this round, along with other issues related to trade union freedoms and the settlement of administrative situations for various professional groups, which are files that the unions consider essential and expect tangible measures regarding them. In this context, the Prime Minister's office is expected to host an important technical meeting on April 6th, bringing together the committee in charge of reforming pension systems with representatives of social partners, with the aim of deepening the diagnosis of the financial situation of the concerned funds, which face increasing challenges that threaten their balance in the medium term. This meeting also hopes to reach consensus formulas that ensure the sustainability of pension systems, while preserving the acquired rights of employees and workers, in light of the wide anticipation of the results of these consultations, especially with the approach of Labor Day, which constitutes a symbolic station for evaluating social gains.
