The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Tom Berendsen, said during a press conference today, Tuesday, in Rabat, following his talks with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, that "The Netherlands considers that a genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty constitutes the most applicable solution" to the dispute over the Sahara.
This position was also expressed in a joint statement issued after the talks Bourita held with Berendsen, who is on a working visit to Morocco on April 7 and 8. Berendsen also renewed the Netherlands' support for UN Security Council Resolution 2797 and for the efforts of the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, Staffan de Mistura, in order to "facilitate and conduct negotiations based on the autonomy plan presented by Morocco, with the aim of reaching a political, just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution". On the other hand, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands noted, according to the joint statement, that the Netherlands will work on this basis, in accordance with its position, including at the diplomatic and economic levels, in respect of international law.
