The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank Group has approved financing of €120 million for the Nador port business park development project in the western Mediterranean.

A press release from the bank indicates that this project aims to strengthen value chains, particularly export chains, with the aim of supporting the Kingdom of Morocco in the transformation of its economic model, improving the business climate and attracting significant investments that strengthen social and economic development in the East.

The project also aims, according to the same source, to ultimately create more than 30,000 jobs, by increasing the volume of trade and other related activities in the East, particularly in the Nador region.

The industrial port complex of Nador, in the Western Mediterranean, is developing as part of Morocco’s port strategy. By 2030, this sectoral vision aims to strengthen the integration of the port system into the regional transport network, and to strengthen the competitiveness of the entire port logistics chain to create value and local employment opportunities, thus accelerating the economic and social development of the East.

In this perspective, in 2015, the Bank approved an initial financing of 112.8 million euros to contribute to the Nador port project in the western Mediterranean.

In 2022, this first project benefited from additional funding of 57 million euros, in response to the economic impacts to which it was exposed due to the health crisis.

With a view to inclusive development, the Bank also approved, in 2023, financing amounting to 200 million euros to complete the Guercif-Nador highway and strengthen the attractiveness and competitiveness of the Eastern region in terms of logistics.

This financing aims to contribute to connecting the future port of Nador, in the western Mediterranean, to the Moroccan motorway network. In addition to the new port activity zone development project, worth €120 million, the Bank’s total contribution to this multimodal and comprehensive programme will reach approximately €490 million.
