Former US President Barack Obama announced on Friday his support for Vice President Kamala Harris to compete against Republican challenger Donald Trump in the November 5 presidential election.
“Earlier this week, Michelle and I called our friend Kamala Harris and told her that we thought she would make a fantastic president of the United States and that she had our full support,” Obama said on the social network X.
Kamala Harris was thrust into the limelight of American politics after President Joe Biden decided not to seek a second term in the White House. Biden immediately threw his support behind his vice president, who then received the backing of several Democratic Party heavyweights.
Observers say Obama’s support adds to the growing momentum of Harris’ campaign, which on Thursday said she was ready to debate Donald Trump.
The Republican candidate for the American presidential election, for his part, considered it “inopportune” to organize a face-to-face meeting with his new rival before she was officially designated by the Democratic Party.
