Hary Laurent Rahajason, the Director of Communications at the office of the President of Madagascar, announced an assassination attempt targeting President Mickael Randrianirina and his wife, as reported by the newspaper "L'Express de Madagascar".
The official stated in statements to journalists on Thursday that 5 drones flew over the presidential residence on the night of Sunday to Monday. He added that due to the presidential security apparatus possessing anti-drone systems capable of jamming them, the aircraft were forced to leave the premises. Rahajason said that an investigation into the incident has been opened, clarifying that the drones were not carrying ammunition, but were equipped with infrared monitoring devices to monitor activities inside the residence and determine the number of people in each room. The presidential spokesperson described the incident as possibly "an attempt to intimidate by external forces" dissatisfied with the direction of Madagascar's leadership towards diversifying fuel supply sources in the country. The official also revealed that the Republic's intelligence services received information indicating that certain parties intended to set fire to the parliament building on Saturday, April 18.
