The public prosecutor at the court of El-Othmania in the wilaya of Oran decided to remand Rai singer Warda Semati, known as "Warda Charlomanti," in temporary custody, following a complaint filed by the Algerian Ministry of Religious Affairs and Endowments.
This decision came after a wave of widespread controversy sparked by the concerned artist through diverse digital content, including posts and video clips considered to be in violation of public morals, in addition to a public dispute with her ex-husband and the release of a work of art that included offensive phrases, as well as the announcement of her remarriage and the live broadcast of its ceremonies via the internet before the end of the iddah period, which provoked strong reactions on social media. According to those following legal affairs, the entry of the Ministry of Religious Affairs as a party in this case falls within the role of public institutions in protecting societal values and addressing any content that is viewed as undermining public order or violating legal regulations. The artist is expected to face charges related to the publication of content that affects public modesty, in a case that has become a wide-ranging topic of discussion within Algeria, between those who call for the regulation of the digital space and the restriction of controversial content, and those who see the case as an extension of the controversy over the boundaries of freedom of expression in the artistic and digital fields.
