Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, and the Federal Minister for European and International Affairs of the Republic of Austria, Ms. Thomas Brandner, signed on Wednesday, April 22 in Vienna, a memorandum of understanding to establish a strategic dialogue between the two countries.
This agreement falls within the framework of the two countries' desire to strengthen relations of friendship and cooperation in many areas, particularly political and economic, with a view to elevating them towards a strategic partnership, in accordance with the principles of mutual respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, independence, and non-interference in internal affairs. Through this memorandum of understanding on strategic dialogue, Morocco and Austria reiterate their conviction that consultations and the exchange of information on bilateral, regional, and international issues of common interest will contribute to deepening understanding between the two countries. This agreement, which is based on the Vienna Convention of 1961 on Diplomatic Relations, enshrines the pivotal character of the historical and distinguished partnership between Morocco and Austria, which celebrated on February 28, 2023, the 240th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations. The agreement also comes as an extension of the strong dynamics and the significant progress recorded following the official visit of the Austrian Chancellor, Karl Nehammer, to Morocco, which culminated in the adoption of the joint declaration between the two countries on March 28, 2023, in Rabat. In this context, Rabat and Vienna have expressed their common will to strengthen bilateral cooperation and establish a strategic dialogue aimed at deepening existing cooperation axes and developing new ways of coordination in various fields of common interest.
