As part of efforts to upgrade the health system and enhance medical services in the Taounate province, a meeting was held at the governorate headquarters on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. The meeting was chaired by the provincial governor, in the presence of the Director-General of the Territorial Health Group for the Fez-Meknes region, accompanied by several health officials and administrators, as well as the head of the Territorial Health Zone in Taounate.
This meeting served as an opportunity to assess the reality of health services in the province and identify the most significant challenges facing the sector. The goal is to develop practical solutions that will improve the quality of medical services, facilitate citizens' access to treatment, and meet the growing health needs of the population.
Discussions focused on ways to overcome the identified shortcomings by strengthening human resources, rehabilitating health institutions, and providing essential medical equipment and medications. This is to ensure improved patient reception conditions and enhance the quality of care, in line with the high royal directives aimed at reforming the health system and promoting spatial justice in access to healthcare.
In this context, the Director-General of the Territorial Health Group for the Fez-Meknes region affirmed that the competent authorities have begun diagnosing the health situation in the province to identify priority needs and differentiate between emergency interventions and those requiring short- and medium-term planning.
He explained that this approach aims to develop a practical vision for improving the performance of health institutions and bringing medical services closer to citizens, with special attention given to structural health projects that will bring about tangible transformation in the province's health services.
Mezraoua Provincial Hospital.. A Commitment to Enhance Health Services
The new provincial hospital project in the Mezraoua commune received significant attention during the meeting, as it is one of the most anticipated health projects in the Taounate province. The project is expected to expand bed capacity, improve the management of patient cases, and reduce the strain on other hospitals in the Fez-Meknes region.
In this regard, the importance of early preparedness for the operationalization of this health facility was emphasized. This includes providing the necessary medical equipment and ensuring the availability of qualified human resources, especially specialized medical personnel, to guarantee its readiness to provide services that meet the expectations of the population immediately upon its opening.
For his part, the governor of Taounate province stressed the need to redouble the efforts of all stakeholders, each from their respective positions, to improve access to healthcare and enhance the quality of services provided to citizens. He emphasized the importance of supporting human resources, rehabilitating health institutions, and providing necessary medications and equipment, while consolidating a culture of responsibility and commitment to the national duty in serving the population.
515 Million Dirhams for the Construction of a 120-Bed Hospital
Following the meeting, the provincial governor and the Director-General of the Territorial Health Group for the Fez-Meknes region, accompanied by the delegation, conducted a field visit to the construction site of the new provincial hospital in Mezraoua commune. They held a working session with the site managers, inspected the project's various facilities, and received explanations on the implementation phases and the progress of work.
According to the data presented on the project, it covers a total area of approximately 11 hectares and 37 centiares, with a built-up area of 31,092 square meters. Its anticipated capacity is 120 beds.
The total cost of the project is approximately 515 million dirhams, funded through a partnership between the Ministry of Health and Social Protection and the Fez-Meknes regional government. The progress of the work has reached about 40 percent.
This hospital facility is expected to be a qualitative addition to the health infrastructure in the province by expanding treatment services, improving the management of emergencies, and reducing patient transfers to other hospitals in the region. Furthermore, it will contribute to improving health indicators and enhancing the quality of medical services provided to citizens.
The Next Phase Challenge: Moving from Diagnosing Constraints to Tangible Service Improvement
These institutional moves reflect a trend towards strengthening coordination between regional authorities and health sector management officials, with the aim of addressing existing challenges and accelerating the pace of local health infrastructure rehabilitation.
However, the actual impact of these efforts will remain linked to their translation into practical measures, whether in terms of filling the gaps in human resources and medical specializations, improving reception and treatment conditions in existing institutions, or completing the new provincial hospital project and equipping it with the necessary resources to ensure its operation according to its expected objectives.
Thus, improving health services in Taounate remains dependent on the integration of interventions and the acceleration of planned projects, ensuring higher quality health services for the population and strengthening their right to access treatment under favorable conditions.
