Spanish media have launched an unprecedented campaign against the army following the leak of videos documented by Moroccan migrants, revealing the extent of the damage resulting from the violence and physical assaults they suffered in the streets of occupied Ceuta.
A number of files and lawsuits received by the National Police and Civil Guard regarding assaults and theft of smartphones from Moroccan migrants since the army deployed to the streets as part of what were termed "operations to restore security and protect property" have been declassified.
Civil bodies and human rights associations have intervened in response to the blatant violations committed by elements of the Spanish army during their sweeps in the streets, beaches, and forests surrounding the occupied city. Recordings from various sources have revealed serious transgressions, including physical assault on Moroccan migrants and the confiscation of all cash and phones they possessed during intervention operations.
These transgressions have been corroborated by several medical certificates issued by the University Hospital of occupied Ceuta, which expedited the opening of a judicial investigation in coordination with the Spanish Ministry of Defense to identify the army personnel who appeared in some videos documented by individuals who were in public spaces or on apartment balconies.
The Spanish Ministry of Defense has moved quickly to open these investigations to preserve the reputation and ethics of its army, especially after the scandal erupted widely within Spanish society, in addition to the significant pressure from visual and written media outlets, which are also demanding accountability for all those involved in the violations.
