Lebanese President, Joseph Aoun, affirmed on Monday that the goal of direct negotiations with Israel is to end the war, considering that whoever dragged the country into it is committing "treason," in an implicit reference to Hezbollah, which described the direct negotiations as a "sin."
During his reception of a delegation from the Hasbaya region in southern Lebanon, Aoun said, according to the presidency: "My goal is to reach an end to the state of war with Israel, similar to the armistice agreement" signed by the two countries in 1949, asking: "Was the armistice agreement humiliating? I assure you that I will not accept reaching a humiliating agreement." Aoun explained in response to accusations from Hezbollah without naming them: "Those who dragged us into the war in Lebanon are holding us accountable today because we made the decision to go to negotiations under the pretext of the absence of national consensus, and my question to them is: When you went to war, did you first have national consensus?" He added: "What we are doing is not treason, but treason is committed by those who take their country to war to achieve foreign interests."
